Youth Conservation Camp

For over 30 years, the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts has sponsored a week long summer conservation camp for Virginia high school students (grades 9-12) on the campus of Virginia Tech. The program brings together about 90 interested students for a week of learning about Virginia's natural resources from conservation professionals and faculty from Virginia Tech. Most of the instruction is hands-on and outdoors.

Applications

The Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District will select applications for up to two campers, which will be sent to the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts for final approval.  Applicants must be in grades 9-12 during the regular academic school year.  Twelfth graders who graduate in May, June, July, or August are eligible to attend.  Previous campers may not attend.  Applications must be sent to the District by the deadline noted on the application; any applications received after this date will not be eligible to attend camp.

Cost

The total cost per student for Youth Conservation Camp is $550.  The Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District will pay $500 for each camper to attend; the camper is responsible for paying $50.  Please do not send payment with the application; students who are chosen to attend camp will receive notification of their selection, which is when the payment can be sent.

Transportation

Transportation to and from camp is the sole responsibility of the camper.  We do not encourage campers to drive themselves or others to camp due to safety, liability, and limited parking.  However, if this is the only transportation available, a waiver form will be sent with camper information at a later date.

Additional Information

Two "Outstanding Campers" will be chosen by their peers during camp and presented with a special award.  Each camper attending camp will be given a certificate and a T-shirt.  In addition, parents and guardians are invited to attend the closing program on Saturday.
